His natural aptitude for listening to patients and understanding the complexity of their lives made psychiatry the obvious choice when choosing a specialty. He came to Edinburgh in early 2000 to begin his training in psychiatry.

A Consultant Psychiatrist

Other than a brief sojourn in Australia, he has worked in and around Edinburgh ever since. A Consultant Psychiatrist since 2009, he works for the NHS in East Lothian. He has consulted privately since 2015, initially with Spire Edinburgh Hospitals, then from early 2022 with Edinburgh Adult Psychiatry. His special interests include mood disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions and sports psychiatry.

With a history of both mood disorders and ADHD in his family, Dr Ferguson finds it greatly rewarding to help his patients and their loved ones find the optimal treatment for these conditions. He aims for full recovery and loves nothing better than hearing from patients they are “the best I’ve been in years”.

Outside of work Dr Ferguson enjoys open water swimming, chess and mindfulness. He lives in East Lothian with his wife, 3 children and Maisie the dog.
