Anxiety disorders

The term anxiety disorder refers to a group of illnesses including generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and phobias.

These illnesses often have symptoms in common such as physical symptoms including trembling, nausea, shortness of breath and psychological symptoms, such as feeling on edge, difficulty concentrating and irritability.

Experiencing an anxiety disorder can sometimes lead to depression and it is not uncommon for individuals to have symptoms of both. For some, experiencing anxiety can also lead to other problems such as drug and alcohol misuse.

Experiencing an anxiety disorder can interfere with your ability to live life to the fullest however there are effective treatments available. The treatment offered will partly depend on which anxiety disorder you have been diagnosed with.  During your consultation with Edinburgh Adult Psychiatry we will discuss your treatment options which may include medications such as antidepressants or anxiolytics. Complete symptom resolution is our goal.
